  1. Objectives of the Assignment 

  1. The primary objective of this consultant was to assess the adverse socio-economic and environmental effects of mining activities on the livelihoods, health, environment, and social dynamics of local communities in Rulindo District, with a specific focus on Rukozo and Ntarabana sectors.

    1.2. Specific objectives included
    • Assess the socio-economic benefits and challenges posed by mining to local communities
    • Assess the environmental impacts of mining activities
    • Provide actionable recommendations for inclusive, sustainable, and environmentally friendly mining practices.

    1.3. Scope of the assignment.
    The assessment was conducted in the 2 sectors of Ntarabana and Rukozo in Rulindo district The consultant was expected to:
    • Conduct a desk review of relevant literature, policies, and regulatory frameworks related to mining in Rwanda.
    • Undertake fieldwork in selected mining sites in Rulindo District, in Ntarabana and Rukozo sectors.
    • Analyze both qualitative and quantitative data on socio-economic and environmental dimensions.
    • Produce a comprehensive assessment report with policy and practice recommendations.
